Asociation of Friends
It was only a few years ago that the World Health Organization classified Chemical Dependence as a disease. This classification did not , in itself, lead to a substantial reduction in the prejudice and discrimination suffered by many sufferers and their families, nor did it lead to a marked improvement in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
The general lack of information about the disease caused unecessary suffering and aggravated the already complex situation of those struggling with its effects.
The Association
In November 1996, a group composed of family members of chemical dependents, gateful for the opportunity to support their loved ones in the recovery process, joined together to form an association aimed at "mutual support". The objectives of the group were to reduce the anxiety and suffering of other relatives and friends caused by lack of understanding of the disease. The Association is a non-profit organization and its objectives are entirely social in nature. Its work is carried out by volunteers. Given the scope of its activities the participation of both the private and public sectors is very important.
Aims:
To promote meetings between family members (co-dependents) to provide emotional support;
To promote an exchange of ideas and knowledge about the difficulties surronding life with a chemical dependent;
To organize the family members (co-dependents) as a mutual support group, thus facilitating the assumption of responsability within the therapeutic process.
To raise awareness within society, in government and in the private sector of the need for adequate resources to treat patients who cannot afford treatment.
